Project Description
Former Brisbane-based artist Craig Walsh is known for his stunning video and data projections in public spaces and, more recently, for producing works in collaboration with communities. This book focuses on works produced since 2000, when we published Walsh’s last monograph, Insite. While covering a huge range of projects, it focuses particularly on Walsh’s recent projects Digital Odyssey (a series of residency-based works made in rural, regional, and remote Australia), Murujuga in the Pilbara (which explores the relationship of the Pilbara’s local indigenous communities to Country), and Embedded (which extends that enquiry to consider impact of mining on the Murujuga). Michael Fitzgerald essay provides an overview of Walsh’s work. Essays by Judith Blackall and Robert Leonard address Digital Odyssey and Embedded respectively, accompanied by an interview with the artist by Annemarie Kohn. The monograph was jointly published by the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney, with support from Arts Queensland.
As the collaborating directors of both MCA Australia and IMA Brisbane suggest in their foreword: “Australian artist Craig Walsh is known for his site-responsive works in public space, particularly his spectacular video projections onto landscapes and buildings. Walsh began to gain recognition in the 1990s, developing art projects for vacant lots, rock festivals and shop windows. He has now been working in public space for 20 years, enjoying commissions from all over the world. Operating outside galleries, often outside Australia, and recently outside cities, Walsh has not been so visible in the Australian-art context. His work deserves to be better known within the art scene”.
